People or Performance | How to Lead for Both

Event Overview

Delivering results has never been harder.
Economic uncertainty, rapid advances in technology, geopolitical unrest, the debate over remote and hybrid work, talent shortages, and shifting attitudes toward work are all shaping how we lead.

Yet while the world has changed, leadership styles have not.
The more we demand of our people, the more they become exhausted and burn out. Many leaders are caught in this dilemma.

Strategy and technology are in place, so why are results still inconsistent?
This seminar reframes that question through the lens of leadership. It is a place for you to think through your own organization’s challenges and the actions to take.

Drawing on Franklin Covey’s original research, we will identify the factors that hold performance back. We will then introduce what leadership looks like when it combines high expectations with deep care, using the 6 Critical Practices for Leading a Team as our framework. Finally, through discussion with fellow participants, we will explore what you should expect of your organization’s leaders, and how best to support them.

The program includes group discussion and a networking session. We hope you will leave with fresh perspectives and concrete ideas in the context of your own organization.

For HR, Executives and Department Heads Facing These Challenges

This seminar is designed for HR and L&D professionals, executives, and department heads who recognize any of the following:

Results Are Inconsistent

  • Strategy is clear, but execution varies from team to team
  • Individuals perform well, but results don’t translate across the organization

Leader Development Isn’t Keeping Pace

  • New leaders struggle to shift from a player mindset to a leadership mindset
  • Leadership development is left to chance or to individual experience
  • High performers are overloaded, while development opportunities are unevenly distributed
  • A pipeline of leaders is not emerging, and fewer people aspire to lead

People Are Exhausted

  • Team members and leaders alike are worn out
  • The more we demand of our people, the greater the risk of burnout and turnover

Organizational Foundations Are Shaky

  • Unclear roles and expectations lead to misalignment
  • There is little sense of unity or trust across teams and departments

What You Will Gain from This Seminar

  1. Understand why results are inconsistent, from the perspectives of people and leadership
Examine seven factors: ambiguity, over-control, over-centralization, stagnation, burnout, disconnection and individualism. Identify where your organization’s challenges lie.

  2. See what it looks like to combine high expectations with deep care
Drawing on research data, explore what high-performing organizations and leaders have in common.

  3. Learn how to reduce variability and lift the whole organization
Rather than relying on a handful of top performers, learn how to unlock the potential of the “middle” and build more consistent results.

  4. Explore ways to prevent burnout and channel people’s energy into results
Reframe energy as an asset to be nurtured, not a resource to be consumed, and consider how to embed this into your organization.

  5. Develop a perspective on building your next generation of leaders
As fewer people aspire to lead, consider what your organization can do to make the role more attractive and keep your leadership pipeline full.

  6. Walk away with clarity on your challenges and next steps
Through discussion with fellow participants, identify your most pressing challenge and leave with actions you can start on right away.

This is not a session that teaches front-line leaders “how to do it.” It is designed for executives and HR leaders to identify their organization’s challenges and define a path forward.
